Long Staff in Ash Wood for Immortal Staff Practice
A True Lifetime Companion
When practising the Immortal Staff technique, you need a reliable partner, and our European ash wood is the best in the world. Across Europe, this wood is the preferred material for professional sports equipment and gymnastics apparatus due to its superior attributes. Not only is it tougher than oak, but it's also the world's most flexible hardwood. This means that it's less likely to break and is more resistant to fine cracks than other woods, like oak.
We tried different kinds of staffs from China to practice with. But none of them did as well as our ash wood did. That's why we confidently chose ash wood for our long staffs. The European ash wood is the superior choice of wood for staff practice.
Our staff comes polished to you with round ends for better jumping practice (required for immortal staff form).
Recommend Treatment:
To preserve the staff's flexibility, ensure it doesn't dry out. Initially, and then perhaps annually, apply an oil, so it can penetrate the staff. This bolsters its resistance to moisture and prevents the core from drying, thereby maintaining its flexibility and shock-absorbing properties. Ash wood excels in shock absorption, surpassing other hardwoods. This makes it a healthier choice for combat, as the staff can absorb significant shocks, whether from striking the ground, objects, or during one-on-one combat. You can use a wood care oil or any kind of oil and rub it on the surface, let it rest overnight and if it's still dry, repeat. You only need to do this once, and then maybe in a year or two if you feel the surface is dry, but the treatment usually lasts for a long time. How often you need to do it is very dependent on your climate.
Special Order
The staff is made upon order for you, there is no storage. The best wood (in one piece) is selected to make your staff as good as possible. We might have to wait a few weeks when ash wood is not available. But the staff will be produced as soon there is a premium piece of ash wood ready. Choose the size that fits you (measure from ground to ear) and choose the diameter that is comfortable for you. We ship this worldwide, and such a long staff is not easy for shipping (bulky goods).
Our Experiences
We rigorously tested our ash wood, and even with occasional oversights, it has held up remarkably well and still looks pristine. Despite being exposed to the elements overnight for a year, including rain and high humidity that typically damages wood, our staff remains unscathed. It seems the oil treatment truly did its magic.
It's always satisfying when the staff hits the ground. Typically, with hard ground, the impact reverberates into your hands and wrists, sending a jolt through your bones. However, with ash wood, this isn't an issue; it superbly absorbs the shock.
Versus Waxwood
We explored the use of waxwood, a popular choice for Chinese martial arts. However, when compared to ash wood, it is not quite as good. Ash wood's density and robustness seem it could easily overpower waxwood. Waxwood tends to be softer, to the point where it can be scratched with just fingernails. I can only speculate that waxwood might be preferred for practice rather than combat, possibly due to its affordability in Asia.
Why Wood and not Metal or Carbon Fibre?
One might wonder why not opt for a steel pole in combat? Or even carbon fibre, given its lightweight yet strong characteristics, especially since it's used in professional Wushu competitions. Admittedly, wood might not have the modern allure or specialized features of these materials, but its natural density offers practicality for sustained practice. With metal, you'll contend with issues like rust, oiliness, or coldness to touch. Once you try using a grip meant for a hockey stick on a metal staff, you'll realize that it's not feasible to cover the entire length. On the other hand, while carbon fibre has its merits, it doesn't deliver the same impact that ash wood can. Wood feels just right in your hand, it is warm, antibacterial and keeps your hands dry.
Get to Know Your Staff
Every staff is unique and has its characteristics, fast movements need trust and practice. This is why having a true life companion is so important for practice. Keep the feeling consistent and you will develop extraordinary skills.
Disclaimer:
No staff is the same, the colour, as well as the weight, can vary a lot. See it as its personality, each staff is unique. Even if you order more than one, you will probably receive a different characteristic for every staff. Shipping also might be delayed for several weeks if no premium ash wood is currently available. Please do not order if you require a staff fast. Good wood takes a while, and we will complete your order! The staff is handmade by professional European carpenters.
We are not responsible when you break this staff. We ourselves never managed to break one, they are sturdy as hell. But use it smart, do not smash it against the road, concrete, or rocks, but that should be common knowledge.
Ash wood is a premium wood that is limited in its available quantity. We actually need to wait until an ash tree is brought in and can be processed. Please respect nature and respect this staff, ash trees can become very old and take a long time to grow. You are not buying from an industry but from local foresters in Europe.
